SHEPHERD | Alderman W.P.Shepherd | The above was the first labour councilor elected to Thornaby-on-Tees Town Council. He was a carpenter by trade and I believe at one time a trade union official. In the 1930s he became a full time political agent for the Labour Party in the Stockton-on-Tees Constituency. He was instrumental in the defeat of Harold Macmillan (later P.M.) in the 1945 Election seeing George Chetwynd returned to Westminster as the M.P.
