Robert Petrie

Robert Petrie, whose monument is in St Mary’s Church, Reigate Surrey (grave 71350), His father was ROBERT PETRIE, M.A.; rector of the Grammer School of Selkirk 1719-1729; schoolmaster of Jedburgh 1729 -1734; Licensed by Presbytery of Jedburgh 2nd of January 1734; called 16th May 1734 and ordained 17th August 1734; died 15th July 1764, aged 63yrs. Buried in Canonbie graveyard. He married 24th July 1727, Margaret Waugh, only daughter of Andrew Waugh, Selkirk, and Margaret Plummer, and had 10 children. Amongst the children, in addition to Robert Petrie M.D., were two Members of Parliament. 1). JOHN PETRIE. M.P for GATTON 1796 - Apr. 1800 Born. 1742, 2nd s. of Rev. Robert Petrie, minister of Canonbie, Dumfries by Margaret, da. of Andrew Waugh of Selkirk; bro. of William Petrie*. m. (1) 11 Nov. 1779 at Calcutta, Ann, da. of Page Keble, paymaster of marines at Calcutta, 1s. 3da.; (2) 6 June 1793, Elizabeth, da. of George Vesey of Lucan, co. Dublin, 4da. John Petrie died at Calais, 5 Feb. 1826, aged 84. 2). WILLIAM PETRIE M. P. FOR EAST RADFORD 1796 - 1802 11 May 1747, 3rd s. of Rev. Robert Petrie, and bro. of John Petrie*. educ. by John Murray, schoolmaster of Canonbie, Dumfries. m. 15 Nov. 1792, Margaretta Aurora née Munro (d.1819), wid. of George Smith of Madras, at least. He died at Penang 27 Oct. 1816, aged 68. His son William was then deputy commissary general at Calais. Both worked for the East India Company.
