Robert Richard Whittaker was born in 1879 in Skipton, Cracoe, Yorkshire. He was the son of Robert Whittaker, a Schoolmaster in Cracoe, and his wife Ann Bassnett. Robert Richard Whittaker was a well respected journalist and dramatist. He married Gladys Mary Gates, and they had 2 sons together. Later in his career he was the editor of the Yorkshire Evening Post.
