John Pancoast Smith was born in Philadelphia; the son of one of ther city's leading merchants. He set out for a tour of Europe in 1827; and settled in Paris. He left his estate in the USA to a French lady; Marie Louise Charlotte Briel. Smith appears to have been well-connected. A letter of introduction exists for Smith and his brother; from one of the USA's greatest politicans Henry Clay; who was Secretary of State for War; to Albert Gallatin; the Swiss-American politican who was the US Treasury Secretary but also served as the American Ambasador in France and the UK.
