How long for submissions to be on website?I have sent a disk to you several weeks ago, which still isnt showing? Did it get lost or does it take that long to show? I have sent a couple of messages to Charles with no response? Many thanks!
New additions are added as soon as possible but at present there is a slight backlog. However in this particular case the CD has not arrived! Also, no email messages about it have been received.

Stoney Gravestone ReceiptThese photographs are proving to be a most valuable resource in my researches for the geographical area of Wharfedale
Thank you!Thank you so much for your extremely fast response to my request. Living in the US it was not practical to visit England to get a photo of the grave and it means a lot to have it.
A Great ResourceWhat a great resource. As the sole administrator of a free-to-use website myself I know just how much work can be required to keep the site up to date and to respond to queries in a timely manner.
Thank youThank you for sending me a copy of the image so quickly.

We can all do something to helpAfter receiving a few pictures of graves of distant relatives I decided to be come a volunteer
in my local area and its become a very interesting hobby lots of Badly Decaying Gravestones and very modern gravestones not so much of a use now but I look at it as a foundation for the future people in 50- 100 years time look back and think I'm glad they took those pictures oh so long ago when they were new.
So all I am asking is for you to spend a summers afternoon in the local grave yard snapping away
Many ThanksThankyou so much for a wonderful web site and a prompt response to my request. Your work is invaluable to family researchers who cannot search cemeteries for the information they require, it is much appreciated
THoughtful and helpfulWhat help and and a good photo I received to my philatelic enquiry. THe emails wre prompt and courteous and the photo was kindly sent within a day or two. How refreshing for someone to offer such as this and as promised.
Many thanks indeed
Suggestion to reduce incorrect email address To reduce the occurance of incorrect email addresses being entered, you could have a second 'email verification' field. The form would only accept the request if the email address was entered correctly twice. This is a pretty common technique used on websites.
I did initial have two email fields as you have suggested but found that people were just pasting the incorrect address from one field to the next! I also received so many negative comments that I decided to reverted to using just one.
First time I've used your service. Impressed. Many thanksFirst time I've used your service. Impressed. Many thanks
I see that an individual request is now asked for regarding I see that an individual request is now asked for regarding each image to view. I feel that if they were all available to anyone, that it would be a much more useful thing, as the spelling of surnames is a bit ideosycnratic, and the person doing the name research may have a different spelling to that which you have been able to extract from the stone itself. Is there any intention to go public with all images, at all?
Thanks
Adrian McTiernan

Response to emailI received the image when I requested it; your retrieval system is easy to follow. The possible ancestor (Ogden, William Lambert) turned out to be an infant grandson. BTW, unique and interesting User validation.
ParryThankyou yet again for helping me to add to my family tree

Splendid work - thank you!I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your work. I was at Greyfriars last year, took hundreds of photos, and when we got home to the US, I found so many of the stones were unreadable. Thanks to your page, I can determine what those stones said.

Church Location Details correctionI believe that you have a church wrongly listed.
Your records show:
All Saints's Church
Herefordshire (Cemetery 1410)
the Church Photograph you have is of:
All Saints's Church
HERTFORD, HERTFORDSHIRE
Common mistake as many people confuse Hereford and Hertford. I was raised in Hertford and attended the Church.

Spreadsheet link problemHi Charles, I've been reading through your Volunteer information & found that the page to access a blank spreadsheet comes up as non existent. I would like to volunteer to photograph & record The 'Ipswich General Cemetery' Queensland, Aus. but could see nowhere to actually sign up. With re: to the spreadsheet, I have my own program & will just use the headings from your example. Thought you'd like to know about the link though.

Oldest Gravesite at Campbellās Hill CemeteryI was wondering if you could help us with knowing who the oldest burial site belongs to in Campbellās Hill Cemetery?
My sons & I strolled through the cemetery today admiring the beauty of the old world charm of the various gravesites of those who have left this world before us, and we were wanting to know who the first person was who was buried here? We believe it was as early as 1850?

St Mary Magdelene, Broughton in FurnessBrought in Furness is not, and never has been in Cumberland. Until 1974 it was in Lancashire, in 1974 it became part of Cumbria.
The GPR stores English cemeteries in their 1900 counties. St Mary Magdelene has now been set as in Lancashire.

Superb websiteThank you for this wonderful site. I found some real treasure in here and will be volunteering to add some South African graves to the resource.
wonderful useful siteI have been able to complete parts of my research that were missing thanks to Charles Sales' great site - I cannot praise it enough
Navigation from the home page didn't work for meEntering my Family Name in the left-hand part of the home page resulted in an Error Message. Entering it in the 'find family' box at the top-right of the other pages worked correctly every time.
The error has now been fixed
Spelling error in village name"Witten by Walsham" (St Margarets) - the name is actually Witton. The near village is currently mapped as Witton Bridge. Referring to it by its proximity to North Walsham may be valid; never heard it referred to that way by my family however (my uncle was and may still be a keyholder for the church).
The error has now been corrected.
What a wonderful resourceMany thanks for providing this free service. It must be a great comfort to those unable to travel distances to see gravestones of their loved ones and others. May I also say what a prompt service this is - for free too!
Best wishes
MEMORIAL FOR Ernest George HARPER Thank you so much for you speedy response to my request for the image of
Ernest George Harper. The photograph is of excellent quality.
I really appreciate the hard work and the time you have taken to put this
site together.
Thank you once again,
Wolverhampton Wolverhampton references should be shown as Staffordshire NOT Shropshire. In 2011 it would normally be categorised as in the West Midlands but historically Staffordshire is its ancient County location and most researchers would be content with that.
Unlisted graveIn front of the free-standing stone archway in the churchyard is a gravestone in patterned brick with the lettering "1895" at one end, "1915" at the other, and "RUTH" in the middle. This seems not to appear in your list. It seems to be connected with the archway, as the latter has the same sort of brick beneath it. Does anyone know who is buried here?

Problem with Email AlertDear Charles
Many thanks for the prompt dispatch of the photo I ordered for Joan SCOTT 's Grave Stone in Horne, Surrey. This has proven to be the grave of my 6th Grt Grandmother and has guided me to her previously unknown parents etc.
Being disabled I am unable to travel to such places as all my ancestry seems to come from Kent, Surrey, Suffolk etc. which as I am sure you will know is a fair distance from Somerset.
Having discovered your excellent service I am certain I can now complete a few glaring gaps in my Tree.
Thank you once again.
Sincerely
Jim Scott

Church in ChristchurchMy Dean family relatives were born and raised in Christchurch Hampshire (now Dorset?) and my great grandmother passed away when in her early 30's. She had her children baptised at St.John the Baptist Church in Moordown, Bournemouth so I assume she would have also been buried there. After making the trip from Australia and visiting the graveyard it was impossible to know where to begin to find a memorial. I am just wondering if this church may be on your list of future projects or whether you can offer any advice how I may do research online (which has yielded nothing so far) Many thanks .... Kris

Date of death of Margaret Drummond, nee MunroThank you for opportunity to look at image of Munro gravestone. I am certain that this lady died on 23rd july 1853. There is a death notice in The Aberdeen Journal, Wed, 3rd Aug 1853. This would make her birth year 1777 which is more in keeping with the age of her husband, George Harley Drummond. By mistake I entered this comment in the monument details. You might want to verify my comment before changing the record.

Cremation and info datesDo you only record memorial / grave stones for those buried or do you include for those cremated? Also, it could be useful to know when the latest information was recorded. Wonderful site though
Whenever a cemetery is now added to the GPR the day is now displayed on the cemetery page.

photographs without permsissionWhilst I can see that this site may be a useful resource for people who are researching family history, I have to say that I was shocked and more than a little upset to find my parents' grave on the site. I came across the site and the image entirely by chance and, in all honesty, I feel quite angry and disappointed that someone can take a photograph of the headstone and then upload without relatives' permission
I can understand your feelings. I was surprised when I first joined a family history site, to find my parents listed in the tree of someone I had never heard of. The people who photograph gravestones (as I have done) are looking for information, and mean no disrespect. There is no way to ask permission of family - I have many siblings, in theory not one of them could give sole permission to allow photographs of a family monument. I regard uploading photos as a public service, helping others in their research. Information shown on gravestones can be very helpful!
In the 15 years I have been running the GPR I have had 5 requests to remove details from the website. Whenever anyone does contact me to remove information from the database, I do ask them to confirm that this request is supported by all members of the immediate family.
Many thanksI would just like to say a huge thank you to all involved in this site. I have located over 70 missing memorials for my North Devon families, which is absolutely brilliant.

I have a book Our Boys -Ware and it list I think maybe all the sad young men you have for Ware. I went to the cemetery as it just around the corner with the book and found many of the graves including WW2. One that stuck out was in a village up the road to ware High Cross. A man who was called Leake and he was in the Boer War and was a surgeon and managed to get into WW2 via France. He got A VC twice and I think there is only three people that have these. I think it is a fitting tribute to be able to do this.

Just to say THANK YOU Dear Charles, Thank you for your email regarding the new page. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank yourself, and the many others, who have worked, without payment, to put together this amazing site. Now, in our retirement years, we hope to be able to contribute more to the site, enabling some repayment for the valuable information which we have been able to retrieve here, without the need for trekking around graveyards. Kind Regards, Cheryl Sanderson.
Thank you!I just want to thank you for this wonderful resource. As all of my ancestors come from the UK and Ireland and I live in Australia, this has been a great help. I never thought I would see the graves of any of my ancestors.

Thank you so much for the information, it has been very helpThank you so much for the information, it has been very helpful. My relation has now begun to know a little of his father and is to visit the cemetery soon. I wish all Scottish records were as obtainable.
Out of interest, we have been told that records for Comely Bank Cemetery Edinburgh were lost in a fire. Do you know of any group that may have this information? We would like to place a headstone but do not have details of all those who occupy the plot.
Incidentally, I have tried three times to post a comment but each has been rejected with no links or however long the message. If this is happening often perhaps people are unable to show how grateful they are, which is a shame.
Many thanks

Joseph and Isabelle LandauThe photographs of the graves of Joseph and Isabelle Landau (nee Poliakoff) exceeded my expectations. I had not anticipated the Greek columns and statues in a Jewish burial place, but they exhibited the extraordinary wealth of the family. Having read about Isabelle's marriage to Joseph in the diaries of her cousin Zinaida Poliakova, seeing a physical grave site made the stories all the more concrete and real. Your work is invaluable and much appreciated. Since I cannot travel to France at this time to visit the cemetery, this was the next best thing. Thank you so much for sending me these remarkable photographs.

I had three email requests from two persons concerning this matter. As I explained in my email responses, the information on grave monuments in public cemeteries can be considered as public documents that do not require permission to be published - they have already been published in stone!! However, as the persons concerned were so insistent and stated that they had all their family's permission, I did remove all records relating to James Edward Gooderham from the GPR website.I do find this very sad that the daughter in law of the above named person insisted on his details being removed so that in future none of his descendants can view his grave monument.
ErrorI've noticed what must be an error in the entry against Joanna Bowden on the monument of Annie Ley image 292, grave 324403 and thought you would like to amend it.
Although the photo is unclear, Joanna Bowden cannot be Annie Ley's wife! It would seem likely a closer examination of the inscription would reveal she was mother of Annie, and / or wife of George Bowden.
I have corrected the error - she was the wife of George and mother of Annie

This web page has restored that ability to me and for that I am forever grateful. Please keep up the wonderful work which is rapidly becoming an important tool in the world of Family Research and when you reach that point where it becomes an impossible task, please, please pass it on to someone or some organization who will maintain it and nurture it to even greater heights. It is your wonderful legacy to the word.

Fantastic, Helpful websiteThank you so much for the images you have recently sent me. I really appreciate the work you have put in to this invaluable resource. Keep up the excellent work. Thanks again.
Gravestone PhotographThank You for sending me the info I requested and taking the time to do so. You said you were having trouble with sending attachments in emails. Would it not be easier to just allow the Gravestone Photographs to be viewed automatically when requested? You could only allow those photographs to be shown ONLY through such sites as ancestry.ca/com/uk or other research sites where a person has to join and pay to use. Just a thought. Have A Good Day. And Thanks again.
Thank you for your suggestion.
In the early days of the GPR, I did do this and allow people access to the higher quality images but people just disregarded the copyright issues. Even now, when I specifically specify that images are just for personal use they are published publicly on the internet infringing the photographer's copyright.
Publishing GPR on Ancestry sites, if they are made public, means that anyone can copy an image and use it however they may and disregards the photographer's copyright.
By default, volunteers give the GPR the right to send copies of their photos to people who have requested them for their own personal use.
ThanksJust a line to say many thanks for the service you provide.

Thank you for this website, I have found it very useful in mThank you for this website, I have found it very useful in my family research and appreciate the images that I have been able to view. I am wondering however, why the names that are listed as being on a monument, are not visible on the photograph, and am curious as to where this information came from.
What monuments are you referring to Mary maybe I can help. I'm a volunteer
Sometimes when I index I cross check with the parish registers and or the Census -usually to confirm dates that are not clear. I might add other close relatives eg children. I always say this is the case in the notes section. Another case is where there are inscriptions on a part of stone that you cannot get a clear shot of. I hope this helps.
ExcellentThank you again for a great service

family historyThanks for the image. Will be able to use thumbnail guides to find the stones I am interested in
Grateful thanks!Thank you so much for this very useful and beautifully produced website. It has proved a really valuable help when researching several families both at my local church and for my own genealogical research. In one case recently it solved a mystery regarding the marriage of a couple commemorated on a family memorial in Topcliffe church but who were buried in Stockton; it transpired that when it was erected in 1860 the husband's name had been engraved wrongly on the stone - and since that time no-one had noticed! The marriage details were consequently located easily. I am hoping for further insights as a result of locating the Harrison memorials at South Warnborough. Your work is much appreciated.

Invaluable resource for family tree researchThis website is an invaluable resource for furthering your family tree with the information that the headstone can give you. Often highlighting members of the family that are not recorded on the census.
Suggestion to add gravestone question to photo request pageAgain great site - with great mission/objectives.
I just requested a photo and noticed the comment - that lots of spammers send messages through that page.
Why not add a creative gravestone question - similar to what has been added to this comments/feedback page ?
Thanks and regards,
Jaime

Of course,it would be wonderful if more graves could be photographed. The one I found Sylvia Bellman in had only been 10% photographed.
