The details of John Phillips birth are not known. He was a blacksmith and also parish clerk at the church. He married Mary Pope on 10th October 1909 in Westdown. John is listed as a widower. His previous wife is uncertain but may have been Frances Smith of Braunton, marriage 1779. John and Mary had at least four children, maybe six.He died 10th March 1828.
