John was the second son of Florence Trevis and her first husband; John Witherspoon Breckinridge; who was a member of the California State Assembly (1884-1885) and son of General John Cabell Breckinridge; Vice-President of the USA from 1857-1861; and Secretray of War for the Confederate States in 1865. John Jnr; who is buried in this grave; fell ill on his honeymoon in Paris; and was confined to a mental assylum for the rest of his life. He is believed to have died c.1914. His sister married her first cousin; the 1st Lord Hesketh; and his son; of the same name; was the flamboyant actor Bunny Breckinridge.
