Elizabeth (or Bessie) Motherwell was the first wife of Robert Philip. She was born in Sligo. Robert William Philip was born in December 1857 in Govan. He died in January 1939 in Edinburgh. He was a pioneer in the treatment of TB and ended up as the first Professor of TB (Edinburgh University). There are several plaques commemorating him on buildings in Edinburgh.
