Descended from a French Hugenot family; Devrient was intended for his father's silk business. However in 1803 he joined a troop of actors and appeared the following year for the first time ina play by Schiller. Later he became a well-known performer in Germany; France and England; appearing in Shakesperean roles. His three nephews - Edward; Charles-Auguste; and Gustave - all became well-known Shakespearean actors.
