Of Italian Jewish descent; Sanua was a journliast; poet; revolutionary; and playwright. He is recognised as the founder of the modern Egyptian theatre and film industry. He was expelled from Egypt in 1878 for his agistations against the Khedive; and settled in France. In 1900; the Shah of Persia conferred on him the title of Chaer el-Molk (poet of the empire).
