William, born at Sheerness, Kent in 1826 was of the ancient Scottish family of McIain of Ardnamurchan, descended from John Sprangach, third son of Angus Mor, Lord of the Isles. In fact, William was acknowledged to be the 19th Clan Chief of that family. He worked for the Admiralty, serving at Royal Naval yards in Devon, Hampshire and Deptford.
