Please note that all ages and dates of birth in red have been calculated and are probably not on the monument.

The calculated dates of birth should be treated with caution as in many cases it can be one year out.

The calculated dates of birth should also be treated with caution as the ages given on monuments are often inaccurate.

The names above are all the names that are listed on the grave monument. It is most likely that only the entries with dates and ages are interred in the grave.

Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

Related indirectly to Malcolm Laing. He was the Scottish historian, b.1762, d.1818. He was married to Margaret Dempster Carnegie(Carnegy) which is presumably why he is mentioned on this tombstone (he is buried in Kirkwall, Orkney). Margaret Carnegie was daughter of Thomas Carnegie and Mary Gardyne, b.1780, d.1864. Not sure of her relationship to Ann Carnegy. Hope this is of interest.

I have been working on my Gardyne family tree for five years now and would be so grateful to add this to my supply of headstone photos and rubbings that I have managed to find in new Zealand. I am 99% sure of the link to this family and any info I can get is so welcome. I do not like to rely on what other people have written without seeing the proof which is not easy here in new zealand. So once I am 100% sure I will gladly contact this site again to share what ever i have. The internet is a wonderful thing and thats only because of people like yourself giving your time. So in advance Thankyou not only from myself but from everyone who has ever not said it. I have been in similar situations where people cannot be bothered to take two mins just to acknowledge a selfless act and it really does irritate me. Again thanks and kind regards, wendy bamber.

James Carnegy Gardyne W.S. (1777-1864) died at Scarborough, Yorkshire. My father's great-great-grandfather.
(requested on 26 06 2016)
James Carnegy Gardyne appears to be an ancestor of my Kiwi daughter in law ...according to her grandmother. I am going to SP in Edinburgh next week to double check.
(requested on 01 03 2017)
Margaret Dempster Carnegie is in my wife’s family tree and she and her husband are shown on the monument. I wish to include the image on her family tree.
