32970913441Airey was born in Killingworth in Northumberland; joined the British army in 1779. and was posted to the West Indies in 1781. He served with Sir Charles Grey; who recommended him to General Tonyn and Sir Ralph Abercromby. Airey and Abercromby fought in the West Indies against the father of Victor Hugo. Airey was then appointed deput-adjutant-general in Minorca; where he came to the attention of General Henry Fox (brother of the politician) who took Airey to Ireland in 1802; where he met his wife. Airey also accompanied Fox to Sicily in 1805; and was promoted to Major-General in 1812 and given command of the Ionian islands. From 1813-21 he returned to Ireland as Quartermaster-General. In 1821 he was promoted to Lt General and given command of the 39th Regt of Foot; and awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Hanoverian Order in 1823.

Catherine Airey1832 Catherine was the daughter of Richard Talbot; and his wife Margaret who was the first Baroness Talbot de Malahide (in the peerage of Ireland); of Malahide Castle in the County of Dublin. Her mother who was a member of the distinguished Irish noble family; the Nugents. Other members of the Nugent family are also buried in the Paris cemeteries. The sons of Catherine and George Airey were General Sir Richard Airey; the 1st Lord Airey; who married one of his Talbot cousins; and General Sir James Talbot Airey; and their daughter Margaret married the Rev Sir Francis Stapleton Bt.

Craufurd escaped to Brussels; but returned to Paris during the Treay of Amiens in 1802; and remained in Paris under the protection of Talleyrand.

In 1789 he became a local judge in the south of France; and in 1791 was elected to the new French Parliament. Soon afterwards; he resigned his seat and rejoined the army with the rank of Lt.Col. He rapidly distinguished himself in the combats of southern France; and was promoted to general in 1793. He was once again elected to Parliament in 1795; and then became ambassador to Spain from 1796-98. He returned to service in italy in 1799. In 1801 he began an active career as a senator supporting Napoléon. In 1806 he was appointed governor of Parma; and in 1808 was given command of French troops in Naples. He remained loyal to the Bourbons during 'the Hundred Days'; and in 1817 was appointed military governor of Paris. In 1795 he accompanied the king's daugher; Marie-Thérèse de France; into exile in Austria. She later married her first cousin; the Duc d'Angouleme; son of Louis XVIII who ennobled Turgy and appointed him first valet to the Duchess. She paid for his gravestone.

He was elected to the French Parliament in 1819; and remained an opponent of the restored Bourbon régime.
