Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What are the differences between the lists on GPR cemetery pages?
Most cemetery pages on the Gravestone Photographic Resource (GPR) have two different types of lists:
- Grave monument lists
- Surname lists
Alphabetic Grave monument lists
The grave monument lists display all the grave monuments within a cemetery. The lists are in alphabetic surname order of the first name that has been recorded for a grave monument.
This type of list is good for identifying all the names listed on a monument. The names listed include not only those buried but also all other names mentioned. This can be particularly useful when the deceased person is young and the monument lists their father and mother.
Below is an example which is the first grave monument record listed for St Mary's Church burial ground, Trimley St Mary, Suffolk, England.
family surname | full name | relationship | birth year | burial year | age | GPR grave ID |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Adams | George Adams | 1858 | 1937 | 79 | 63087 | |
Annie Bixby | 1902 | 1970 | 68 | 63087 | ||
Frank Bixby | 1898 | 1990 | 92 | 63087 | ||
Jane Adams | 1854 | 1952 | 98 | 63087 |
Adams family monument example
In this example, the family surname Adams is a link to the family name page that lists all the people with the surname starting with Adams. This list will also include any married women who has a maiden name of Adams.
Each of the people named within the grave also have links. These are links to the grave detail page for that particular grave monument. You will see that the GPR grave ID number is the same each person listed for a specific monument.
Please notice that in the above example only two of the names are for the surname Adams. Although no relationship is given on the grave monument, it is very likely that these two with the surname Bixby are the daughter and son-in-law.
Alphabetic Surname lists
The surname list displays all the names mentioned in the cemetery in surname alphabetic order.
This list is useful in finding all the surnames that are mentioned on monuments within the cemetery.
The example below is the alphabetic surname list for the same cemetery used in the above example.

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
