Although childless; he used his considerable fortune of £20; 000 to launch a prominent Ulster dynasty: the Montague Brownes of Janeville; St John's Point; Ardglass; County Down. Browne almost certainly obtained a captaincy in the army for his much younger brother; Peter; then left more than half of his wealth to Peter's soldier son; another Andrew. The family was connected to the Montagues of Cowdray in Sussex. |

Following the American campaign; he held republican views and embraced the French revolutionary cause; and was promoted to lieutenant-general in 1792. He served in Brittany; the Pyrenees; and the Alps; before being named commander of French forces in India; an order which was cancelled at the last moment when he was asked to take command of an army in the south of France. He continued to serve extensively in France; Germany and Egypt; and in 1806 he was appointed governor-general of Silesia. In 1808 Napoléon appointed him a baron of the empire; and he later sought to rally to Napoléon during 'the Hundred Days'; but Napoléon declined his offer. Louis XVIII nonetheless honoured him at the restoration; and he ended his career as an esteemed and patriotic politician. |

He served initially in northern and western France; and as commander of the Paris Arsenal; then in Italy; and was appointed Prefect of the Manche département in 1801. The following year he served in Guadeloupe; and then returned to France; before serving under Lefebvre on the German and Polish fronts. He continued to serve in Germany until 1809; when he transferred to the Iberian campaign and was wounded. In 1813 he returned to Germany; and fought at the battle of Leipzig. He rallied to Napoléon during 'the Hundred Days' but was promoted to the honorary rank of lieutenant-general by Louis XVIII. |

His father was responsible fot the imprisonment of Voltaire in the Bastille. |

Adrien was a grandson of the famous French hero; the Marquis de Lafayette. He opposed the future emperor Napoléon III and was a fervent supporter of King Louis-Philippe. He was elected senator for life in 1875 after the fall of Napoléon III. | ||||||

De Bruno joined the army in 1793; and distinguished himself in the Italian campaigns. In 1806 he became the ADC to Louis Bonaparte; brother of the emperor; and king of Holland. In 1810 he was appointed general in the French army; and distinguished himself again at the battle of Borodino. Taken prisoner at the battle of Dresden; Napoléon reproached him for his inattention. He remained a prisoner of war from 1813-1814. He rallied to Napoléon during 'the Hundred Days'; but continued in regional command posts during the Bourbon restoration after Waterloo. | ||||||

At the outbreak of the revolution he was sent to the Indian Ocean with the French fleet; but in 1794 he was ordered to return to France where he was promoted to captain; only then to be arrested for his noble descent. In 1796; he participated in the failed French invasion of Ireland; and then joined the Egyptian expedition; leading the capture of Malta and participating in the battle of Aboukir. Napoléon then appointed him maritime prefect of Lorient; and then from 1801-1814 minister for the navy and the colonies. He was repsonsible for sending the French fleet to Trafalgar. In 1815 he resumed his ministerial position during 'the Hundred Days'; but withdrew from public life under the restored monarchy. He was murdered by one of his own servants who set fire to his house in attempted robbery. |
