Between 1896 and 1916 the founder of The Dashwood Foundation, Edward Hayes Dashwood, built a considerable number of flats and houses in Balham on the site of a farm – known still today as the Hyde Farm Estate. On 20 Nov 1946,The E Hayes Dashwood Foundation” aka “The Dashwood Foundation' was established by Edward to provide accommodation for disabled ex Service people and those who have served in the Merchant Navy.

Their son Daniel James Delafield, born 1852 approx, moved with his uncle Thomas Delafield, to Abergavenny, South Wales. They set up in the brewery business & were very successful during the late 1800s and into the 20th century. Daniel James Delafield married Jane Bowen & they had 6 children: Ada, Annie, James (known as Jim & who went to Canada), Miriam (known as May), Mita (who died when a child) and Travers. Ada, the eldest child, and my maternal grandmother, was given her gradmother's name - Ada Mary Cornelia Delafield.
