St Mary's Church burial ground, Downe
The parish church of Charles Darwin who lived at Down House on the outskirts of the village. Although he is buried in Westminster Abbey the graves of several members of his family are to be found in St Mary's churchyard. Full inscriptions of many pre 20th century gravestones taken from the 1919 survey by Leland Duncan are published on the Kent Archaeological Society website at http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Libr/MIs/MIsDowne/MIsDowne.htm. This information has been used to supplement the photographs for gravestones that are now badly weathered. Most of the legible and accessible gravestones inside the church and in the graveyard have been photographed and indexed.
