Joined the army in 1790; and was noticed by Napoléon at the battle of Medino del Seco in 1808 when he was promoted to Brigade General; and then full General in 1813. He served widely in Napoléon's European campaigns; and in 1815 was chief of staff to Napoléon's Minister of War during 'the Hundred Days'. He continued in high command after the Restoration; and was French ambassador to Constantinople. He is mentioned by Victor Hugo in 'Les Misérables'.
