Born in Guadeloupe; he came to France in 1780 and was commissioned in 1782. In 1792-93 he served in northern France and was promoted to adjutant general in 1793. He resisted Lafayette's attempts to march on Paris; and the betrayal of General Dumourez; but was himself betrayed for reasons unknown by Hoche. After serving in italy; he was sent back to Guadeloupe to quell the slave revolt and took command; and which led to his appointment as a full general. In 1806 he returned to Europe to fight in Germany; before moving to the Spanish front where he died in combat Guarroman in 1808. His name is inscribed on the west side of the Arc de Triomphe.
