The brother of the Engish economist David Ricardo; Jacob was secretary to his father on the London Stock Exchange from 1802-1806; and chairman of the Exchange in 1820. With another brother; Samson; he began business in France and unsuccessfully bid to finance French efforts in 1823 against the Spanish constitutionalists whom he secretly supported. In 1825 Jacob and Samson were heavily criticsed for mismanaging a loan to Greek nationalist rebels. He married Abigail Levy; and his eldest son was John Lewis Ricardo; member of the London Stock Exchange; author; and MP for Stoke on Trent 1841-1862.
