Doyle was the eldest son of William Doyle of Brambletown; Kilkenny in Ireland; and the nephew of General Sir John Doyle Bt and General Welbore Ellis Doyle. William Doyle was commissioned under his uncle; Welbore Doyle; and fought in the Netherlands with Abercromby; and in northern France. In 1794 he transferred to the regiment commanded by his uncle General John Doyle; and served in the West Indies as ADC to Abercromby and followed him to the Mediterranean front (Gibraltar; Malta and Egypt). In 1804 he commanded the reservists in Scotland; and in 1805 he was assistant quarter-master and commanding officer of his uncle's regiment when Sir John was appointed Lt. Governor of Guernsey. In 1808 he was sent to Portugal and Spain; and distinguished himself on both fronts and was appointed a Spanish Lieutenant-General. He attained the same rank in the British army in 1837; and was decorated by the British; Spanish and Turkish monarchs. His son was General Sir Charles Hastings Doyle Bt; (1804-1883); Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
