Oppert was brought up by his grandfather; the Ashkenazi Grand Rabbi of Paris. He became a successful businessman; who served with the French forces in 1938-39 befor ebeing captured. He escaped to Vichy-controlled France; and used his business contacts to supply the French Resistance. He also helped to hide Jewish children; and to organise th escape of stranded Allied soldiers. He was captued; tortured and killed in 1944. His wife participated fully in his work and set up three orphanages for Jewish children orphaned during the war.
