Born to a Jewish family in Strasbourg; he was evacuated to Périgueux in western France in 1939. He soon joined the local Jewish resistance network; he participated in the clandestine operations taking Jewish children from occupied to Vichy-controlled France. He later entered the armed struggle as a member of the 'maquis'; and took part in the escape operations for stranded Allied soldiers. From 1944-46 he acted as Jewish chaplain to the 1st Army as it pursued the liberation of France.
