Buquet joined the French army in 1791; and rose to command the gendarmerie in Metz in 1799; before joining the organisation committee of the camp at Boulogne sur mer (in preparation for the invasion of England) in 1802. He was promoted to general; inspector-general of the Gendarmerie in 1808; and then of the French occupying force in Spain 1810-1814. From 1815; he was elected three times to the French Parliament to represent the Vosges département.
