Charles Harris was born in Landkey, Devon, and Christened there on 14th June 1835. He was one of 13 children. He worked as a gardener and lived in various places, including Gloucester, Butleigh Somerset, Newport South Wales, and Llanfoist Village near Abergavenny, before settling in East Grinstead, where he was Head Gardener at Hammerwood Gardens for about 30 years. Charles married Charlotte Nash on 18th July 1857 at St Mary de Lode, Gloucester, and they had 5 children.
