John was the son of James Wakley of Tawstock who married Mary Gratton (2nd wife) on August 1st, 1852 in Tawstock. John had two brothers - Philip and Richard.A further brother, William Henry, died aged 2 months. He also had sisters Elizabeth and Mary Jane. John and his brothers had their own building company called Wakley Brothers that was active in Barnstable between 1890 and 1910.
