In 1891 Hugh was a farm servant at Old Square East Murkle and he resided there with both parents and his sister Johan and brother Donald. In 1901 the family was residing at Sibster Farm House at Olrig [Olrick], Caithness and his father was a farm servant. Along with Johan and Donald there were his siblings, William, Jane, Mary, James and John.
