Captain Royal Artillery. Son of Alexandre Baynes and Margaret MacLeod. He served in the Peninsula September 1812 - April 1814. Present at Pyrenees , Nivelle and Toulouse. Present at Quatre Bras and Waterloo in Captain Sandham’s Brigade and with the army of occupation until December 1818. Also served in North America 1822-1827 and the Ionian Islands 1837-1830. Retired on half pay 25th September 1834. His father was Dr Alexander Baynes who had a sister , Jane and a brother Edward. Dr Alexander and his wife Margaret McLeod had eleven children , O'Hara , Charles , Harriet , George McLeod Baynes , Henry who had a son Alexander , Edward who died early , another Edward , Maria and another Maria that died early and finally a George Williams. George McLeod was fighting against Napolean I and his nephew Henry John Le Marchant Baynes became Superintendant of the Metropolitan Police and made arrangements for Napolean III funeral in his exile in England. Both the uncles were linked to fighting and both of the nephews were linked by the funeral of Napoleon III.
