Descended from a noble family of the kingdom of Savoy and Sardinia; Michaud adopted the royalist cause during the French revolution but subsequently rallied to Napoléon; before returning to royal allegiance. Taken under the patronage of Fanny de Beauharnais; the sister-in-law of the Empress Josephine; he was a leading journalist; publisherand historian. In 1812 he was elected to the Academie Française.
