Marie Anne was the ninth of ten children of Benjamin George a wealthy Hugenot brewery owner and Sara Roberts. In 1781 she married Etienne du Titre one of the richest men in Berlin through his cotton business. They lived a sumptuous lifestyle and were amongst the leaders of Berlin society as friends of the king and acquaintances of the Goethe and the Romantic author E.T.A Hoffmann. Madame du Titre as she was known was renowned for speaking a curious mix of French and German which often gave rise to both confusion and some hilarity.
