John, known as Jack, was a lieutenant in the Leeds Pals, having joined them in 1914. In 1916, after a spell in Egypt, he went with the regiment to France, ready for the Big Push, the Battle of the Somme. On 1st July 1916, as an acting captain, he was killed in the first attack, along with a large proportion of the Pals, and his body was never found. His name appears on the family grave at Lawnswood, the Thiepval Memorial, the Leeds University Memorial, and as a scholarship at the School of Medicine.
