Born in Killwinning in Scotland; he joined the East India Company and made his fortune in India. He settled in Paris on his return to Europe; and became an author and collector. He was a close friend of Marie Antoinette; and he is believed to have been one of those who urged the Queen and her family to make their ill-fated flight to Varennes to escape the revolution. Craufurd escaped to Brussels; but returned to Paris during the Treay of Amiens in 1802; and remained in Paris under the protection of Talleyrand.
