Initially an infantry instructor in 1759; he served in the Seven Years War; and by 1792 had attained the rank of colonel. He was dismissed from the army; but re-joined as a simple soldier and reached the rank of general in 1795. From 1796-99 he served in Italy; and was nicknamed the Italian virgin for his honest character. Napoléon appointed him as a senator; and granted him the honorary title of marshal in 1804; and in 1808 he was appointed Governor of the Invalides militairy hospital and a count of the empire. The following year he was appointed commander of the National Guard. He rallied to Napoléon in 1815; but recovered his honorary title of marshal in 1819.
