Ordained priest in 1870; he worked in parishes until 1879 when he began to study languages during a convalescence. He is regarded as the inventor of experimental phonetics; He studied at the Institut Catholique de Paris until 1887; when he joined the staff of this Catholic University. In 1894-95 he co-founded the first holiday course in French for foreigners for the Alliance Française; and in 1923 after a distinguished career he was appointed to the Collège de France.
