Pierre Debray was a local miller who owned the windmill now known as the Moulin de la Galette. In 1814; he was killed defending his mill from attack by the Cossacks stationed in Montmartre. According to one legend; was strung up on the sails of the windmill which is depicted on the grave. Other members of his family also died in the attack. Later members of the family founded the 'guingette' at the mill; which Renoir immortalised in his painting; and which became one of the favoured meeting places of the artistic community.
