Lützow served in the Prussian army from 1795-1807 After the treaty of Tilsit he was authorised to found a private army company (the Black Troopers) who were renowned fro their bravery in combat until Lûtzow's capture by the French in 1814 In 1815 he fought at the battle of Ligny and was captured again by the French but escaped on the day of the battle of Waterloo His regiment was by then integrated into the Prussian army Several German warships were later named in his honour and a cavalry regiment
