Chaplain to the King and author (along with Archibald Johnston of Warriston) of the National Covenant which was signed in Greyfriars Kirk on 28th February 1638 His monument was fired upon by Parliamentary troops during Cromwells occupation of Edinburgh but it was restored after the Revolution of 1688
