23rd November 1844. A brilliant Mathematician, Thomas Henderson was appointed as the first Astronomer Royal for Scotland in 1834 and he proceeded to make over 60,000 stellar observations in the Calton Hill Observatory before his premature death. He was also the first person in history to have evidence of the distance to a nearby star in his observational data.
