Service Number. 2672. Enlisted - 9th August 1915. Wounded in action 9th October 1916 (GSW in the buttocks). Accidentally wounded GSW in the neck 13th June 1917. Awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre and Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At the attack on WESTHOEK RIDGE on 20th September 1917 he set a splendid example to his men , and gave considerable assistance to his officers during the consolidation. An enemy sniper was effectively sniping our troops whilst they were digging - Corporal HITCHCOCK went out under heavy fire and shot this sniper. At all times he showed utter disregard for personal safety.'
