Notes about War Memorial

Staxton War Memorial

At the meeting of the Parish Council held on the 10th July 1919 it was suggested that a memorial of some kind should be erected to honour the men of the parish of Willerby that had fallen in the onslaught of the recent war.
It was agreed that steps should be taken to raise money by public subscription.
In October 1919 it was reported that a sum of £80/18/3d had been collected so it was agreed that a Wayside Cross should be purchased designed by Sir Charles Nicholson at a cost of £100.

Siting the cross proved controversial.
Option 1 was the grass bank on the south side of Beck Hole at that time it was the centre of the village.
Option 2 On Wains Lane near the Church, that was deemed to be the centre of the parish.
At the Parish Council meeting there was a split vote so a public meeting was called but again there was a split vote and on both occasions the chairman refused to use his casting vote.
The problem was then passed to the Sherburn Rural District Council, they also found the community equally divided and decided on a different site. They proposed the memorial should be sited on the grass verge at the east end of the Staxton. This decision was met with disbelief, but accepted as part of the agreement with Sherburn R.D.C.

This decision caused a lot of unnecessary heartache to the bereaved. Another decision caused further distress, was omitting the names of three of the Miller brothers who had died of wounds shortly after the Armistice was signed.
The final cost of the memorial including carriage was £132/12/0d.

During the 1990's the parish council decided to purchase a wreath of poppies from the British Legion, and services were held with a small number of people in attendance. Unfortunately with an increase of traffic this was not without danger.

The memorial was deteriorating and in need of repair, so the Parish Council made the decision that action had to be taken. A complete refurbishment and re-siting could now take place.
While being dismantled it was discovered that the main stem was crumbling and would have to be reduced by 12 ins (305mm) The names would be cut into new granite inlays. It was also agreed that the names of the 3 Miller brothers previously omitted should be added.

The Memorial was rededicated on the Armistice Day the 11th November 2002 by the Rev Marjorie Hill at the service attended by children from Hertford Vale School and members of the public.
Total cost of all work was £6,669.95 paid by the Parish Council.

In 2014 the memorial garden was developed with monies raised by a raffle in the village and a greater amount from funding set aside for community projects by Ryedale District Council. New railings were erected, benches bought, a new path laid and flower beds planted at a total cost of £8,991.47.
