Robert Gemmell Hutchison
1936811855first name on monumentMy father was the nephew of Robert Gemmel Hutchison and passed many happy stories of him to me, Eleanor, and my brother. As children my father James M Hutchison and his sisters spent holidays with him in Edinburgh where the paintings littered the house. My aunts told me on several occasions that the little boy in the Gundy Man painting is my father. He appears twice in the painting, once in each half of the canvas. My grandfather, James Squair Forman, was Robert's brother.
Marion Maud Hutchison
1963 daughter of Robert Gemmell Hutchison
Roberta Louise Montgomery
1966971869relationship not given of Robert Gemmell HutchisonGemmell Hutchison had a daughter Roberta Louise, born 1889 (not 1869) who died in 1966. A close enlarged view of your photograph shows that Roberta Louise Montgomery is noted on the gravestone (partially obscured) as Gemmell's daughter, and though the birth date is also partially obscured, I think it may well be 1889 rather than 1869. A search of the Scotland's People database shows a birth of a Louise Roberta Hutchison in 1889, but none in 1869. Similarly the death of Gemmell's son George appears to be 1918 rather than 1913, but it is difficult to be sure without visiting the grave. My grandfather was Gemmell Hutchison's nephew. Thank you so much for providing this photograph. The information on it has helped confirm some of the family history that survives, and enlarge on it. I hope that I may be able to visit the grave sometime in the future.
George Hutchison
1913 son of Robert Gemmell Hutchison
Janet Boe
1942851857wife of Robert Gemmell Hutchison

Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

I am Hon Pres of Carluke Parish Historical Society and I am trying to piece together when RGH and family lived in Braidwood Carluke. They were here in the 1901 census and when his infant son, also RGH, died in 1898. I see it is listed that George died in 191. Didn't he die WW1 in 1918?

I am trying to trace a living relative (and contact details) of the painter Robert Gemmell Hutchison (1855 - 1936) as I have an oil portrait by him which I believe may be of his mother who may have been called Margaret (whose date of birth and death I also seek)?

Gemmell Hutchison was my grandfather's uncle. I am researching family history.

I know very little about Gemmell Hutchison and there appears to be little information about him. I do, however, love his paintings and I am trying to piece together for my own interest as much information about him and his family that I can. I hope no-one will consider this an intrusion. As part of a project to research donors of paintings to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow I am researching the life of Robert Gemmell Hutchison. He donated one of his son`s paintings in 1918 as a memorial to his son George who was killed in WW1. Many thanks
