Matthew Bates
1815751740first name on monumentMatthew Bates of Kenton. Matthew Bates died in 1845 - the gravestone has deteriorated since I last saw it in the 1980s and '1815' should read '1845'. He was born in Eltringham, in Ovingham parish, in 1773 and baptised there on 22 July. His parents were John Bates and Ann (Hartgrove). He was a coal-miner and moved to Kenton in about 1800, having married Catherine Parker in Ovingham in 1795. He was well known and respected as a grower of garden flowers, even evolving his own varieties, and winning prizes at local flower-shows.

The calculated dates of birth should also be treated with caution as the ages given on monuments are often inaccurate.

The names above are all the names that are listed on the grave monument. It is most likely that only the entries with dates and ages are interred in the grave.

Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

Matthew B.ates was a relative of my wife's family. I am concerned that the dates for him are erroneous as the Matthew Bates whose records I have was buried in 1845. Maybe I can help correct the reading. I know the gravestone personally havong seen it more than one occasion in the past.
