He was described as “Able Seaman & Rigger”, but it is not clear whether he served in the Royal Navy or the Mercantile Marine. He died in Cushendall Cottage Hospital of fracture to the base of the skull caused by fall from the mast of the yacht “Clementina” in Cushenden Bay whilst engaged in his work as a Rigger. He is commemorated on the Roll of Honour in All Saints Church in his home town of Brightlingsea and on one of the tiles [at pew height] around the inside of the church-there is one for every marine casualty even before WWI. The church contains many items of interest particularly the unique frieze of memorial tiles to men lost at sea. The tiles bear witness to the various losses suffered by this seafaring community. While similar memorials can be found on the continent these tiles are a unique memorial in England. The ‘tile’ memorial says ‘’accidentally killed on HM Yacht Clementina.” He may have been working off the salvage boat, Linnet on Clementina a few weeks after the collision. HMS Clementina was a 625 ton armed Admiralty yacht, 469/1887,built in 1887.She served as an Auxilliary during the Great War.[hired 22/9/14]. After a collision on the 5th August 1915, she beached off Tor Cor Point. Armament: 2-6pdr, Pennant No.025, Examination Service, Capt Thomas Walker (retired Vice Admiral). Closing the SS Adam Smith (299grt) for examination off Tor Cor Point in the early morning, in collision, holed, and flooded from the stokehold aft. To prevent her sinking, she was run aground and beached nearby. Salvage was abandoned, and she was sold for breaking-up where she lay; no lives lost at this time, but an Assistant Engineer RNR * died on 20 September 1915 probably from injuries sustained. Note: location is confirmed as South Tor Cor or Torcor Point, Co. Galway (+J/C/D/He/dk; ADM.137/143) * this would be E.S.
