Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

F/L W.F.W. Porteous, DSO, DFM and Bar, was my uncle. He was killed early in the morning of 20 May 1944 whilst undertaking an air raid over Le Mans, Sarthe, France. He was the bomb aimer for the Deputy Master Bomber. All crew members of his aircraft were lost. Also lost was the aircraft and crew of the Master Bomber. Accounts of the losses vary. In my family, we believed that they were shot down by flak but recently reports of a collision between the Master Bomber's and Deputy Master Bomber's aircraft have surfaced. I have yet to find a primary source for these accounts.
