A Cooksey | WW1 memorial. Albert was born in 1887 in Royston to John & Amelia Cooksey. He had enlisted in the KOYLIs in July/ early August 1907 on a 12 year term, 7 years colour service & 5 years in the reserve. He was with 1/KOYLI in Hong Kong in 1911 and later transferred to 2/KOYLI. As war was breaking out his colour service was just coming to an end. He went to France 11th Nov 1914. I believe he was a despatch rider. The Third Ypres Campaign 'closed' 10 Nov 1917 but heavy and brutal fighting carried on as Allies fought to take control of land near the village of Westrozebeke (north east of Passchendale) to secure a tactical advantage over the winter or 1917-18. At 1.55am on a bright moonlit night the 2nd Battalion of the KOYLIs launched an attack, it was doomed, they were silhouetted by the moonlight - I read that 6 officers and 52 men were killed, with 120 men wounded and 41 missing. Albert was one who lost his life. His name can be found on Panel 108 of the Tyne Cot Cemetery alongside many of his comrades. In 2013, Patrick Dolan found a photograph of Albert among his grandfather's effects and contacted Jon Cooksey, Albert's great nephew about it. All those years later, a face could be put to the name. |
