E W Sterling | 1941 | first name on monument | Military headstone Eric William Sterling born 2 May 1912 in Streatham. Artist and art shop assistant. Married Irene Cox 1937. Trained as a bomber pilot in WWII and his plane was hit returning from his first mission. He seems to have been aware of how badly his plane was damaged and managed to avoid Southampton and any housing attempting an emergency landing in a field near Fawley. Sadly the plane crashed killing him and all his crew. He left a widow and twin boys. |
