After a tempestuous youth, including marriage against the will of his wife's parents, he became a convinced Christian and close associate of George Whitefield. He was a butcher by trade, but travelled around various towns in Gloucestershire at weekends to preach the gospel. |

Her maiden name was Michell (Mitchell), and her family were the Lords of the Manor of Randwick. She married William Hogg in 1737 against her parent's will. |
