Samuel and Martha Johnson are my 3rd great grand parents and a photo would be nice to have in my family research documents. I was born in Barnsley and now live in Blackpool and only visit Barnsley rarely. The only help I can provide you is what I have in my family tree eg Martha was born in 1819. If I come across more detail, I will forward this to you. Thanks in anticipation

My Mother in Law is Molly Horton nee Strutt and she is related to the Strutt's from Barnsley. Thanks.

Notes about St Mary Church burial ground

St Mary's church contains gravestones dating from the 17th century up to the 1860s when the municipal cemetery opened for new burials. Unusually the majority of the gravestones are ledger slabs, stones which are laid flat on the ground, and which even form part of the paving around the entrance. Many are intricately carved and are in surprisingly good condition. Those in the grassed areas are often partly concealed beneath turf so the full inscription is hidden. About 70% of the gravestones have been photographed and indexed. The remainder and those inside the church are still to be done.
