He was also a champion rifle shot, winning many cups and medals, including the Blenheim City Rifle Belt a number of times in a row and the gold medal for the best shot in the South Island in 1898-99 and again in 1903. It is said that every Saturday morning he would walk to the memorial park in the centre of Blenheim, climb and stairs of the memorial clock, wind and maintain it.
