Peter Haggart
1889 son of Peter HaggartDied in Tahoe, on 4 September 1898, and is buried at Auburn, Placer County, California, near where he lived. Peter Hagart was born 1850 Scotland, the son of Peter Hagart& Jemima Jane Henderson. An article in the Placer Herald after his death reads as follows: Peter Hagart Dead. Peter Hagart, the noted fisherman and hunter, died suddenly on Sunday last at McKinney's resort on Lake Tahoe. Mr. Hagart had been a sufferer from diabetes for about a year past which precluded his taking his usual summer outing high up in the wilds of the mountains; his desire always being to get as far away from the haunts of man as possible, that the fish might be more timid and the game more wild. His ailment had made this kind of life impossible and he had gone to the Lake for a little diversion just a few days before his death. Mr. Hagart was a Scotchman, and true to the name. Of his many noble traits of character, none shown forth more prominently than his rugged honesty. Although a man of few individual friendships, yet he was respected by the entire community and greatly admired by those who knew him well. Peter was a typical bachelor. He love his gun, his tackle, his dog, his romps and roams; he lived well, was moderate in his habits and enjoyed life while it lasted. He was a lover of nature and in his wanderings had climbed the tops of the highest mountains in Scotland, in New Zealand, and in California, Washington and Oregon.Mr. Hagart left quite an estate including a home and fruit ranch on the Shirland Tract, near Auburn. Its thriftiness is but a further testimonial of the character of the man. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the undertaking parlors of Crowell & Safford, the Rev. H.F. Burgess officiating, assisted by the following choir; Mr.s R.F. Rooney, Mr. E.R. Gifford and Mrs. A.D. Fellows. The following gentlemen acted as pall bearers; Capt. McCann, W.A. Freeman, H.G. Ponting, J.H. Wills, Normand Logan and A.H. Jackson. The deceased has no relatives in this country, but a brother and sister survive him at New Scone, Perth, Scotland. Note: Captain McCann was a leading light in the British community in Auburn; H. G. Ponting is Herbert Ponting, the photographer on Captain Scott's Antarctic expedition, who also lived in Auburn for several years.

Peter Hagart, who died in California and is listed on this grave, was a friend of Herbert Ponting, Captain Scott's photographer in the Antarctic. Ponting, who also lived in Auburn, California, in the 1890s, was sufficiently friendly with Hagart to have been a pallbearer at his funeral. The information in the California newspaper says that Hagart was a great mountaineer in Scotland, New Zealand and on the West Coast of America.
